20240213_zip_a239_026 February 13, 2024, Pontos, Girona, Spain: Hundreds of Catalan farmers block the AP-7 and the N-2 near the border with France. During the blockade they have cut down pine trees and made bonfires to block the road in both directions. They plan to spend the night. Spanish farmers continue to be at war against their Government and against the European Union. Organizing the protests was the Unión de Pagesos, a translation of peasant in the local Catalan language. According to this group, ''unfair competition'' from products of outside territories that ''do not meet European standards.'' Since the beginning of their protests, farmers have mainly pointed to Morocco as the origin of a large number of products with which they cannot compete due to their much lower prices. During the previous week, there were scenes in Spain in which farmers entered supermarkets to remove products of foreign origin from the shelves and dump them on the street. This Tuesday they mobilized and caused traffic cuts in the region of Catalonia. Last Wednesday, Catalan farmers turned out en masse with nearly 1,000 tractors converging on Barcelona to put their demands to the regional government. The farmers arrived from various points in the Catalan region with their now famous tractors to cut off some of the accesses to the port of the city of Tarragona, located south of Barcelona. Tuesday's protests, scattered across this region of eight million residents, were focused on the ''unfair competition'' from products imported from countries ''not required to meet European standards'', said a statement from the Pagesos union which called the demos. As in other European countries, angry farmers have been protesting over rising costs, high fuel prices, bureaucracy and the environmental requirements in the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and its forthcoming ''Green Deal''. On February 21 they are planning a huge demonstration outside the agriculture ministry in Madrid. (Credit Image: © Marc Asensio Clupes/ZUMA Press Wire)
